The Woodwind family consists of Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon and Saxophone.  There are larger and smaller versions of some of these instruments such as the Piccolo, Bass Clarinet, Cor Anglais and Tenor Saxophone.  The woodwind instruments can be learnt from around year 4 onwards (depending on how big your hands are!).  A great preparation for learning any of these instruments would be to start with the recorder, from around year 2 onwards.

Woodwind instruments often play in a variety of styles including classical, jazz, pop and folk.

If you learnt a woodwind instrument, it might be possible for you to join the Training Windband, DASP Youth Orchestra, Flute Choir, Clariphones and DASP Jazz Band. As you progressed through to The Thomas Hardye School, you could join the THS Orchestra, THS Concert Band, THS Big Band, Flautissimo, and Saxophonics.
