A LEVEL MUSIC

"Building musicianship, creativity, and confidence for life"

Overview

Students will have the opportunity to delve deeply into the world of music and develop a comprehensive understanding of its many elements. From the study of classical masterpieces and contemporary compositions, to the creation of their own music, the Edexcel A-Level Music syllabus is designed to challenge and stimulate them to explore the full range of music's potential. They will develop their musical skills and knowledge of both performance and composition, refine their critical and analytical abilities, and gain a rich and diverse musical education that will enrich their lives in countless ways. In addition to these key components, students have the opportunity to develop other music-related skill such as ensemble playing, aural understanding, leading and directing, student leadership and event planning. Our A-level curriculum is superbly supported by the opportunity to participate in a wide range of co-curricular musical ensembles, as well as providing enrichment through regular trips and workshops. Our A-Level students perform regularly throughout the year both in the school and in the wider community. They will also act as mentors and role models for students further down the school.

Why Study at THS?

Our students benefit from outstanding facilities, including a state-of-the-art music ICT suite equipped with the latest industry-standard software, and a dedicated recording studio. Our exceptional co-curricular provision further enriches our students’ musical lives.
Our department consistently achieves excellent results with last year’s cohort of Music A Level students achieving progress from GCSE that was in the top 10% nationally.  Part of the reason for this is our highly experienced teaching staff and smaller classes, allowing high levels of individual support and care.

Course Breakdown

EDEXCEL A LEVEL MUSIC
Performing (30%)
 An 8-minute solo recital
Composing (30%) One composition of 4 minutes and two chorale harmonisations
Appraising (40%) Thirteen set works which are examined in a 120-minute written listening exam.

Entry Requirements

Students entering into A Level Music have normally completed GCSE Music (or the equivalent) with a level 6 or above.  We may consider a student without this, if they are able to perform at grade 5 standard and have grade 5 theory knowledge.

Progression

Many of our A Level Music students go on to study Music Performance, Musicology or Composition at university or conservatoire, while others pursue related fields such as Sound Design, Performing Arts or Education. A Level Music is highly regarded for many non-musical university subject courses due to its academic rigour and the depth of both practical and theoretical study it demands. Equally, the skills gained through A Level Music (teamwork, project management, creative problem-solving, digital literacy, and analytical thinking)  are widely recognised and valued in disciplines beyond the arts, including Law, Maths, Sciences, Business, Languages and Engineering, where commitment, collaboration, and attention to detail are essential. Over the years, we have had many students gain places to Oxbridge or other Russel Group universities with Music A level as one of their high grades, even if they haven’t opted to study music at degree level.
